Note that for endometriosis patients often miss to get themselves checked for Adenomyosis #ENDOCHAMPIONS

It took me over a decade to get my endometriosis diagnosed and it took me a major laparoscopic surgery to know that along with endometriosis I also have Adenomyosis when they removed a ten centimeters Diameter Adenomyoma from my uterus.

I explained to you earlier what is Endometriosis. It is the growth of the endometrial tissues which line the uterus outside of the uterus in different parts of the body.

In Adenomyosis, these endometrial tissues grow inside the walls of the uterus.

The cause of both Endometriosis and Adenomyosis is not 100% known to date though there are several theories.

But both of them may often appear together. A study in 2014 revealed that

‘The prevalence of endometriosis in adenomyosis was 80.6 % and the prevalence of adenomyosis in endometriosis was 91.1 %’

Thus I was at risk of having one because of the presence of the other in my body.

Women with endometriosis suffer from pain during sexual intercourse, urination, and bowel symptoms like diarrhea and constipation while as per NHS, the most common symptoms of adenomyosis are heavy or painful periods and pelvic pain.

What is important to know is that while both of these diseases can be asymptomatic, the symptoms of the two interchange and appear together as common, like in my case.

Thus you must note that every endometriosis patient is at risk for Adenomyosis and vice versa. So obviously if you have one, you must get yourself checked for the second.

Diagnosis of Adenomyosis is, even more, challenging than diagnosing Endometriosis and is often confused with Fibroids in the uterus. However, both are diagnosed using transvaginal ultrasound and MRIs.

Treatment of both is on similar lines too so you can be treated appropriately if your condition is diagnosed correctly.

This is Adenomyosis Awareness Month and I request you share this post with anyone struggling with excessive bleeding and pain during Menstruation as adenomyosis is a condition that often gets missed for a very long time.
