I always had very painful periods but my mom thought it was hereditary as she too had it that bad. So for as long as I remember I had to use painkillers and a hot water bag to manage it. It continued throughout my education and then when I was in jobs too. Some said it will go after marriage but it didn’t while some others said post childbirth it sure shall be better but unfortunately for me, it only worsened. I have absolutely no answer if you ask why all the doctors I consulted never ever spoke the word endometriosis to me.
So it was only in 2018, in my late thirties, that a senior gynecologist just by plainly hearing me out for 15 minutes told me that I have endometriosis. I was grateful and she put me on a lot of medication trying to give me some relief. She asked me to exercise but to prevent jumping altogether and I wondered why until she told me that Joint pain may come together with endometriosis pain and it can get really difficult to manage both pains together.
She shared that researchers have established that endometriosis does increase the risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis severalfold. RA is an inflammatory disease that causes knee and joint pain. Further to this, I was put on Lupron injections which have a know side effect of causing knee and joint pains.
These injections and hormonal pills lead to several weight gain which again causes an extra burden on my knees and other joints and may worsen my joint condition in the future.
This is all that is known so far about the relationship between endometriosis and joint pain. However further research is being conducted regarding the same.
The nature of joint pain varies from one endometriosis patient to another. For some, it is on and off and needle while for others it is continuous and unbearable. The only word of caution here is if you have endometriosis do take due care of your joints.
