26 Letters to my Granddaughter: Granny’s COVID19 Chronicles

{This is the first post of the series where I will be writing 26 Letters to my Grandchildren about life during these tricky times for us and what we are learning}

1 April 2020

My dearest grandchild,

A warm hug to you from your granny. Trust you are doing fabulous, my little love and have turned out to be a voracious reader like me and your dad who would be handing over these letters to you. Do read them whenever you get time. I will try to capture here, these times when the entire world including us here in India is hit by one of the biggest pandemics of all times, for you to understand what a flurry of overwhelming emotions we went through each day as the #CoronaVirus cornered the world.

COVID-19 which stands for Corona Virus Disease which has originated in Wuhan, China in November 2019 has within 4 months taken the whole world in its vicious trap. This is a highly infectious disease that has symptoms like flu and often a person recovers from it, however, in the elderly and in the people who have any other ailment like diabetes where the immunity is compromised, this infection becomes life-threatening. It spreads when we come in contact with an infected person or touch a surface touched by him or her.

The world including the most developed countries is not able to control the havoc caused by it and has witnessed thousands of deaths and lakhs infected till today. Entire Europe and America is in a critical state and even the rest of the world is locked down in an attempt to control this mammoth monster.

We in India are scared as hell too, child. Though we got our first case on 30th Jan, the situation has turned alarming in March. We are a densely populated country of 133 crores and if we don’t control it in the initial stages it is difficult to fathom what it can do to us. In light of this, our current prime minister Narendra Modi has announced a 21 days complete lockdown of the entire country from 24 March to 14th April 2020 in an attempt to break the infection cycle as all of us will stay home and will go out only and only if we need some essential commodity urgently. This social distancing will aid us to flatten the curve of those getting infected each day.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that this infection has come to India from those citizens who have traveled abroad and brought in the virus when they knowingly or unknowingly came in contact with an infected person and then spread to people whom they came in contact within India, thus there is an extreme need to quarantine such cases to stop the spread further. Their cooperation is the key at the moment too.

Honestly, I have never faced something like this before and am finding these times really testing also because we are stranded away from our home as all the state borders are sealed, will write about it to you in my next letter though. Nevertheless, I have a deep positive feeling that this too shall pass and we shall soon be free from the clutches of Corona forever.

With loads of love and blessings
Your Granny
Roma
